Research Building Codes To Ensure Accuracy

You need to make sure that:

  • The lengths and measurements for the truss are accurate
  • The pitch and angles are appropriate
  • The interior braces are screwed into the correct parts of the triangle and at accurate angles
  • The size timber you’re using is recommended for the size building or addition
  • The truss design is adequate for the roof design in accordance with the National Design Specification for Wood Construction, the National Design Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Construction, and the Code of Jurisdiction.

Making The Seat & Heel And Tail Cut

You have to be careful to make sure that the birdsmouth will not be more than half of the total depth of the rafter. You dont want your birdsmouth cut to go so deep into the rafter that it weakens the board too much.

On the rafter, you want to cut, measure its overall depth, and divide it by 3. Using this figure, measure and mark two points on each side of the vertical line, which indicates where the birdsmouth will be cut. With your carpenters square, draw a straight line between the two points you just marked. It is going to intersect with the plumb line that specifies the location where the heels and seat cuts intersect at 90 degrees.

With the help of your carpenters square, you should be able to sketch the neat little right-angled triangle you need for the birdsmouth cut.

Flip the square over so that the short side is to the left. Set the square so that the 8 on the short side is level with the rafter, and then position the long side so that the 12 is level with the rafter.

One thing to be cautious of is that a roofs maximum overhang is around 24 inches anything above that would most likely need additional support.

We will leave an overhang of 9 inches in this example, so slide it to the left with your framing square in the same position as it was in the step above, making sure that the 8 and 12 marks stay on the bottom edge of the rafter until the 9 on the long side is inline with the plumb line.

  • Measure width of the building from exterior wall edges to determine roof span.
  • Subtract width of the ridge beam from roof span.
  • Divide the adjusted figure by 2 to establish measurement for the building run.
  • Enter this figure as the run in the roofing calculator.
  • Calculate the roof pitch.
  • It is expressed X/12 and may be included in your building plans.
  • For example, a roof pitch of 7/12 rises 7 inches per every 12 inches of height.
  • Enter this figure in the calculator for pitch.
  • Have the calculator figure the diagonal measurement for the roof rafter.
  • Adjust stair gauges on framing square to the numbers for the roof pitch.
  • In this example, put a stair gauge at the 7 on the short tongue of the square.
  • Place the other gauge at the 12 on the longer body of the square.
  • Set framing square on the board with the 7 mark near the end.
  • Rest the portion of the framing square with the 12 farther down the board.
  • Saw the line to create your plumb cut for the rafters top.
  • Measure along the top of the rafter board and mark the point where you reach the diagonal length.
  • Position the 7 on the framing square at this mark and draw a line down the edge.
  • Measure width of the wall.
  • Subtract that figure from 12.
  • Flip square around and place the long side of the square across the line on the number that represents 12 minus wall width.
  • Make a second line that intersects with first line.
  • Shift the square down the board for the number of inches you want the overhang to be.
  • Cut the rafters end.

    Rafter Spacing For Metal Roof

    Metal roofing, typically steel or aluminum, comes in a variety of profiles and compositions and may be referred to as tin, steel, or corrugated metal. The width of the panel or sheet is commonly set by the manufacturer and the length by the ridge to eave measurement. However, the length can also be precut by the manufacturer and designed to overlap or interlock to keep the weather out.

    The rafter or roof joist spacing for metal roofing may need to be set to support rigid metal panels designed and engineered to fasten directly to the rafters. The rafter spacing will be set by the steel panel manufacturer to provide a structurally sound roof. Rigid metal panels are pre ordered and manufactured for the build, so lead time usually allows for rafter placing based on the panels.

    In most roofs though, the metal roofing is flimsier and is supported by and fastened to a plywood or OSB deck, or to strapping fastened to the rafters. The rafters are commonly spaced at 16 centers when sheathed to provide the greatest support. Rafters that are strapped are either at 16 or 24 centers with strapping placed every 8 to 12 on-center to provide support. The spacing of the straps usually depends on the size of the metal roofing being attached.

The first number is the rise, or the amount of height the roof gains over the horizontal run, usually measured in inches. So a roof with a pitch of 8/12 would gain eight inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run.

    Using carpenters square, place the short side so that the bottom edge of the rafter is level with the 8 . Next, move the long side so that the 12 is level with the bottom edge of the rafter. Then you can mark along the short side to define ridge cut. Finally, you can cut it with a circular saw or hand saw.

    Cutting The Birdsmouth Joint

    Using your circular saw, cut along the plumb and horizontal lines. Be careful not to cut too deeply. If your circular saw cant reach all the way to the triangle of the birdsmouth joint, use the handsaw or jigsaw to finish the cuts. Remove the little triangle of wood and admire your new birdsmouth cut.

    Next, test the birdsmouth cut by setting the rafter in place. Does it have the correct angle for the roof pitch you want? Does the rafters top-end reach the peak of the roof precisely? After double-checking everything, you may need to adjust your calculations and cuts. However, if the birdsmouth seems like a perfect fit, you can use it as a template to cut birdsmouth joints in the rest of the rafters youll be using.

    As with any project involving saws, make sure you follow all safety protocols. Keep power tools like the saws away from children, pets, and adults who dont know how to use them properly. Depending on the size of the roof youre constructing, you may also need a friend or two to help you lift the rafters into place.

    Types Of Roof Trusses

    Aside from the common wood roof trusses, there are still other types that are built using different materials to effectively support and distribute the load to the walls.

    • Flat Trusses

    The flat truss can be designed as bottom or top chord bearing or for multiple and simple spans. This can be cantilevered at one or both ends.

    A flat truss is not necessarily flat, as it slightly slopes to prevent the pooling of water on the roof and prevents the damaging or collapsing of the entire structure.

    While among the most common types, this truss is considered as less efficient because the stress on the webs of the flat trusses is greater compared to other types.

    • Gambrel Trusses

    The gambrel roof truss resembles the appearance of a barn roof. It has two upper chords, with one longer than the other. These two chords meet at the trusss apex. Since it has steep sides, there is sufficient room for a living space below the roof or can be used as a storage space in the attic.

    The gambrel roof truss in homes lets you include an upper floor below the roof. There is also an extra room for the large windows that can make it look brighter inside the house.

    • Bowstring roof trusses

    Usually large and arched, the bowstring trusses give support to the buildings weight, such as the aircraft hangars and the warehouses that require a lot of open space inside.

    • Dual pitched trusses

    Setting Out Rafter Lengths With A Ready Reckoner

    To show how easy it is to use, let’s imagine the roof has a 3.265m total span from outside to outside of the wall plates, the ridge is 45mm thick and the pitch is 30°.

    First thing to do is to subtract the thickness of the ridge from the span of the roof so that the ridge will fit perfectly between the two common rafters. Next, divide the remaining measurement by two. This will give us the span for each individual roof rafter:

    3265 – 45 = 3220mm

    3220 / 2 = 1610mm

    Now, when we turn to the 30° page in the rafter ready reckoner and when looking up the common rafter lengths, one of the things it tells us is

    The length of rafter per meter of run is 1.1543. This means that for every 1m the rafter travels horizontally, the angled length of the roof will be 1.1543m.

    All we do now is use a calculator to multiply 1.610 by the measurement in the book:

    1.1543 x 1.610 = 1.858m

    So, the rafter lengths 1.86m long – Easy!

    Making A Birdsmouth Joint

    Now that we have marked our rafter length and also marked our plumb line that defines the position of our birdsmouth, the next stage is to mark and cut our birdsmouth.

    Before we start marking or cutting anything you have to be aware of that fact that your birdsmouth should be no more than a 1/3 the total depth of the timber you are using. For example, if you are using 6 x 2 timbers, the birdsmouth should be no greater than 2 inches deep.

    With the rules covered, its time to mark our cut. There are several different ways of doing this but we are going to use a two stage method.

    Firstly, lay the timber flat so that its depth is facing upwards and its as horizontally level as possible. Measure its total depth and then divide by 3.

    This will now tell you the total depth that the cut can be at.

    Using this number, measure and mark two points either side of your vertical line that depicts where the birdsmouth is to go, measuring up form the base of the timber and then draw a line between them.

    At some point along this line it will intersect with the plumb line that states the Birdsmouths location. This point marks the location where the seat and heels cuts meet at & 90deg to form the birdsmouth joint.

    The final job now is to join this mark to the underside edge of the rafter at the correct angle so that it sits fully flat and level down on the wall plate timber.
